This was where the helm or the wheel was located. The deck on top of the sterncastle was called the quarterdeck. They had a raised deck near the bow called a forecastle and a higher deck near the stern called the sterncastle. Most larger pirate ships were made of cedar and oak. Once all the framing and planking was completed, caulking waterproofed the ship. Planks were heated up to be able to bend with the curve of the ship. This was done using steamers and wood as fuel. The shipbuilding process began with the frame and then heating the hull of the ship. Sailors also utilized oil on their sails in another form of waterproofing. The pitch or tar sealed the wooden boards of the ship together, keeping water out and allowing the boat to float. On ships, tar or pitch waterproofing was the most common method used.
